소비의 음악에서 소유의 음악으로

소비의 음악에서 소유의 음악으로. 비닐 레코드가 가지는 매력을 잘 표현해주는 문구이자 광고 카피이다. 지금이야 음악이 mp3 파일로 담겨 스마트폰에서 쉽게 즐길 수 있지만, LP 레코드를 듣는 의미는 그 음악에 대해 더 예의를 갖춘다고 해야 할까. 또, 30x30cm의 앨범 재킷이 더 넓고 멋지다. LP에는 뭔가 다른 LP들과도 다르고 CD와는 다른 그 확연한 ‘아우라’가 있다. 음악을 마치 소유한 것과 같다. 만져볼 수도 있고 손이 더 많이 간다. 음악을 듣는 행위에 뭔가 정성이 필요하다. 바늘을 올리고 레버를 당기는 ‘의식’을 치르고 나면 음악에 온전히 집중하게 된다. 더 어렵게 듣는 것 같지만, 음악을 듣는 더 세심한 방법이랄까.

From music of consumption to the music of ownership: This is what vinyl records are about. When you have mp3 files in your smartphones that it’s piece of cake, but LP records make you give more attention to them. The 12-inch album jackets are more artistic as well. LP has something that Walter Bejamin described as “aura” in his book “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction”. You feel like you own the music. It’s tangible, more cumbersome. You have to give more care to the listening process. After finishing the ritual of positioning the needle and pulling the lever, you just have to be more focused on the musical object. There are a few extra thing to care about, bundled with a few extra sensations and personal experience.

조성진의 아름다운 “영웅” 폴로네이즈가 담긴 실황 앨범을 듣고는 LP의 매력에 푹 빠졌다. 이 곡은 3년 전에 처음 들었을 때 귀에 너무나 쏙 들어와서 놀랐고 그 이후로도 여러번 돌려본 곡인데, 조성진만의 곡 해석이 돋보이는 섬세함의 정수를 보여준다. LP로 듣는 것은 처음이었는데, 특히 피아노의 높은 음들이 아날로그적 왜곡에 의한 특유의 느낌이 너무 좋아 그때마다 마치 차가운 얼음에 데인 것처럼 전율하게 되었다.

I was mesmerized by LP records after I listened to Seong-jin Cho’s 2015 Chopin Competition live-action record of “Heroic” Polonaise. I first listened to the piece in mp3 3 years ago, and even then I was surprised at its elegance, listened to it several times afterwards. It shows Cho’s subtle articulation with his own interpretation. It was first time listening to it in LP record, and the high notes passage with the analog distortions was what really got me. It felt like being touched by ice, sending me pleasant chills.

LP의 매력

사실 음악의 각 요소를 정확히 표현하는 밴드윗의 경우 CD가 더 넓고 또 LP의 경우 물리학적 한계에 의해 저음역대에서는 오히려 정보 손실이 일어난다. 하지만 풍부하고 따뜻한 중음역대를 가진 LP의 매력 또한 거부할 수 없는 것 같다. 규격화된 CD에 비해 LP는 같은 앨범 내에서도 다를 수 있는 유니크한 매력이 있다. 음식에 취향이 있듯 음악을 어떻게 녹음해서 듣느냐도 취향의 문제로 생각하면 좋을 것 같다.

Actually, the bandwidth for describing the musical components is wider in CDs, and LP has intrinsic physical limitations that result in information loss in low-frequency domains. However, LP has that warmth in mid-high frequency range. All CDs are identical, but LPs can be unique, and variable even within the same LP name. LP or CD, that is just the question of taste.

하지만 오랜만에 오롯이 하나의 음악을 ‘작품’으로서 대할 수 있는 시간을 준 고마운 시간이었다. 예전에는 음악을 다 이렇게 들었다지만 내게는 음악을 닫는 방식의 새로운 재발견으로 다가왔다.

It had been a long time since I fully emmersed myself in a musical piece, and I am really thankful for that. Back in 70s and 80s, everyone listened to music in this style, but to me it was a re-discovery of a new way to listen to music.
